What is the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and how can it help people with autism?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening program based on Dr. Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory. This theory deals with the workings of the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for our stress reactions and sense of security.
Frequencies of the human voice
The SSP consists of five hours of music specially edited to emphasize the frequencies of a loving human voice. Listening to this music through headphones trains hearing to better filter and focus on other people's voices. This has a calming effect on the nervous system and promotes social communication.
Developed for children with Autism
The SSP was originally developed for children with autism who suffer from hypersensitivity to sounds, difficulty processing information, or problems with emotion regulation. Research shows that the SSP can reduce these symptoms and improve quality of life.
However, the SSP can also be used by adults with autism, or by people with other symptoms such as anxiety, ADHD, trauma or burnout. The SSP can help you experience more peace and relaxation, and connect more easily with others.
